Meet the Racer. In this edition I sat down with Doug Vanstrom at his shop in Collins NY.  Doug has been  happily married to his lovely wife Nikki  for 10 years and they have 3 beautiful little girls.  Doug and his brother Shane purchased his car in 2007. It is a 1984 GT Hatchback that had 30,000 miles on it when he got it.  Doug’s desire to tinker and build engines started while he was serving in the Air Force. So when they got the mustang he couldn’t keep his hands off it and the changes started taking place.  Doug started with MOMS that year and ran his first 2 years in the Naturally Aspirated class. Shane would drive during test and tune, Doug would race. They then progressed to the Power Adder class for the next 2 seasons. During the 2009 season Shane drove one event in MOMS and was hooked. So in 2010 the Vanstrom boys hit MOMS with 2 cars. Doug has a few trophies but hasn’t won a championship yet. Remember that word yet. Through those first 3 years Doug knew his desire to work on engines was growing inside along with his desire for racing, all the while he was working in the family Hotel Development  business. After much thought and family discussion Doug finally made the move and started his own business of Vanstrom Performance and general repair service. The last 2 seasons has seen the “Bionic Booger” going under a transformation. Doug has gone through the whole car with suspension, rear end, motor, roll cage, the whole nine yards. Too much to mention here. During these past couple of years Doug has been helping his brother Shane with his car in MOMS. While at the track Doug has become quite popular with the racers and helps anyone that approaches with questions or problems they may have. At the shop, Doug gave me a tour of the place including the engine room where I got to see some pretty cool power plants. On one of the stands was the monster that is going in Doug’s car. Not fully assembled I was able to see all the parts sitting there waiting to be assembled. Remembering back to the days when I had a little 302 in my Torino, to this thing with all the new technology, all I could say was wow!  There were a few other nice engines sitting waiting to be put back in their nests before the season begins. Currently 5 MOMs cars are sitting in the shop all in different stages of upgrades or modifications. Another project Doug has in the works is a T-bucket he’s building for his father. There are pieces all over the shop in different stages of fabrication as Doug is showing his talent with many custom 1 off pieces going into this thing. I looked over in the corner and asked “What is that?” Doug says “ Oh that’s a 4.6 DOHC out of a 2003 Mach 1 that’s going to power it.” I can’t wait to see this when it’s finished. Dad hang on, this toy is going to fly. As for the “Bionic Booger”? Hopefully if all goes well we’ll be seeing this thing at the track for the 2013 season. I can’t give away anything but based on what Doug told me and what I saw…. Look out for the green machine when it arrives.
